What people usually mean by cash in hand
Quick, flexible, local work without forms — start this week, money in your hand when the job's done. Fair enough. But the problem was never the flexibility; it's what you give up: no comeback if a customer won't pay, no reviews, nothing that builds towards the next job.
Every job on BOB O JOB is on the record — on purpose
You work self-employed and you're paid through Stripe into your bank, with a record of every job. The customer's card is authorised before you travel, so the money is reserved up front and there's no invoice to chase. Earnings are released when the customer confirms, or about 4 hours after you finish, then paid out on Stripe’s standard schedule.
The flexibility is the same. The protection isn't.
- •No minimum hours and no set shifts — as flexible as cash work ever was
- •Most jobs pay between £12.75 and £45 an hour — and every figure you see is what you take home, shown before you accept
- •The customer's card is authorised before you set off, so you're not chasing anyone at the end
- •Every job adds a public review — cash work builds nothing
What about tax?
Being paid in cash never made income tax-free: self-employed income is declarable however it's paid. On BOB O JOB you're self-employed, tax and National Insurance are your responsibility, and a clean record of what you earned makes that easier, not harder. We recommend checking HMRC guidance on self-employment.
